Culture & Education

in the multicultural Ruhr area

This scenically variety - only possible here!

Who would have thought that mining and its industrial sites are advancing from being the nationwide workplace of the population to being the most popular cultural assets in the Ruhr area. Old and disused collieries, machine halls, winding towers and much more were lavishly restored, made accessible and refurbished as museums. The contemporary witnesses of times long gone shine in new splendour and enjoy great popularity among young and old today. Anyone wishing to walk the so-called “Route de Industriekultur” will find a unique wealth of cultural treasures ranging from the mines in the Sauerland and the colliery culture in Essen to the unique mining area surrounding Cologne.
Dirt and dust of the old days have vanished and nature has blossomed completely anew. The value of living in „the Pott“ has increased spectacularly. Large commercial enterprises, medium-sized businesses, new construction projects, cultural programmes, educational institutions, universities, medical research centres and much more have their headquarters in the heart of the Metropole Ruhr. If the Ruhr area were ONE city, it would rank 5th among the largest cities in Europe with a population of 5 million. It is not surprising that it also attracts millions of people from a wide range of interests every year.

Renowned universities, clinics and educational institutions of all disciplines are located throughout NRW and concentrated in the Ruhr area. If you are among the visitors of these institutions, your stay could possibly last longer than a day, leaving you in need of a room, a holiday apartment or an apartment. For many years we, the company “Zimmer im Revier”, have been expanding our housing units so that you can find accommodation everywhere in the Ruhr area and up to the outskirts of NRW. We offer tourists and visitors of all kinds adequate accommodation with cosy charm and functionality, often conveniently located.

In Recklinghausen, for example, the Aurelius Eye Centre has already earned an excellent international reputation. For decades, specialists there have been responsible for the successful implantology of eye lenses, contact lenses or even macular lenses, and are experienced in the field of TransPRK for the correction of visual impairments, cataracts and aesthetic medicine.
The West German Heart and Vascular Center is located in Essen and meets the highest quality standards in the field of cardiology and angiology with many years of experience of high-ranking specialists.

The LWL-Universitätsklinikum Bochum of the Ruhr-Universität „Klinik für Psychiatrie-Psychotherapie und Präventivmedizin“ covers a further large area that has become an integral part of the medical portfolio in NRW. The excellent Vestische Kinderklinik, located in Datteln, is also expanding the provision of paediatrics and youth medicine in a northerly direction.
The educational centre of the IHK in Bochum, the IHK in Dortmund and Essen as well as countless other seminar, education and further education centres offer a wide range of professional development and teaching opportunities.
For such purposes alone, thousands travel to the Ruhr area every year. Since training measures sometimes last a long period of time, our holiday flats and apartments are very popular. In addition they are considerably cheaper than the conventional hotel and therefore an unbeatable alternative.

In addition to the education sector, the Ruhr area is also characterised by its industrial culture and beautiful natural surroundings. The landscape park Duisburg Nord combines nature, industry and fascinating light spectacles in a unique way. Guided tours for children and families, open-air cinema, diving in the Gasometer, vintage car meetings, the annual culture festival “Extraschicht” or extensive walks around the relics of the industrial period invite you to an interesting visit.
A special attraction is the Zollverein colliery in Essen – also known as the “Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr Area”. The old coal mine has been closed since 1986 and attracts nowadays thousands of visitors every year. Whether as part of a guided tour or independently on your own, a walk through the former colliery grounds is worthwhile at any time.
Whether playing a game of Black Jack in the casino, following the miners traces in the permanent exhibition of the Ruhr museum, on discovery tour in the sensory experience field “Phänomania” or enjoying the cuisine in the restaurant “die Kokerei” with summer feeling at the pool, on the enormous area surrounding Zollverein a beautiful day can be spent.
Especially to be mentioned is the “Red Dot Design Museum” located in the former boiler house of the colliery. An international acclaimed institution! Impressively staged, you appreciate the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design trends. Products ranging from creative USB sticks to shapely designed furniture and technical highlights from the automotive and aviation industry invite tourists from all over the world to a highly interesting journey through time. The expositions are enriched by well-designed objects to touch and try out.
The Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen-Schalke has long been a magnet not only for high-ranking football matches, but also for national and international concerts, mega parties, the Biathlon World Team Challenge, opera performances and much more. The Nordsternpark enriches the city with a huge park area including a water playground, many climbing frames and an excellent 4-star restaurant, the “Heiner’s” with adjoining beer garden. The Signal Iduna Stadium is certainly the flagship of the city of Dortmund. The BVB colors the whole city in black and yellow. The Westfalenhallen attract millions of visitors every year to concerts of all kinds and the Dortmunder U, acquired in 2007, is regarded as the flagship project of the new millennium. An extraordinary centre for art and creativity, which is also home to the Ostwallmuseum since 2010.
Witten and the surrounding area enjoy a wealth of highlights. The Kemnader reservoir with its two asphalted hiking paths invites not only hiker but also cyclists, skaters and other fun sportsmen to take a tour around the lake. The adjacent leisure pool Heveney offers swimming fun and at the boat rental water lovers can rent pedal boats, canoes, kayaks, sailing dinghies and so on. The nearby castle Blankenstein, situated high up on the mountain, is a popular location for events of all kinds and leaves nothing to be desired from a hearty knight’s meal to a 5-course menu.
Not only from above the Blankenstein Castle it is possible to oversww the whole Ruhr area. The Gasometer in Oberhausen offers changing exhibitions of several superlatives such as “Der Berg ruft” (The mountain is calling) and the possibility to walk high above the roofs of the Ruhr district by glass elevator.
The “Tetraeder” in Bottrop, a three-sided pyramid construction, was installed on the former mine heap Beckstraße as a walk-on terrace and is an attraction for tourists and visitors from many parts of the country. With clear weather, the panoramic view in four directions is fascinating.
The Hoheward mine heap in Herten resembles a landscape park on a plateau level. The mountain-like fills of three different old mines can be climbed over 592 steps, serpentine-like by bike or leisurely on foot. Has the visitor arrived on top of the 110 m climb the area compensates the efforts with a grandiose view, including the famous landmark “Obelisk und Sonnenkreisuhr “ (obelisk and sun circle clock).
The LWL Industrial Museum Nachtigall colliery, a former coal mine, is located in the middle of the beautiful Mutten valley and inspires with extraordinary installations, guided tours through the old mining tunnels and also serves as a celebration location.
